Do your part to support our community and to show your Hokie Pride at the same time. The Hokies United Against Hunger fund will help with distribution of food products to more than 250 nonprofit agencies, which in turn will provide food to the hungry in Southwestern Virginia.
About Southwestern Virginia Second Harvest Food Bank
The community's food bank was founded in 1981 and is an affiliate member of America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network. The Food Bank's ultimate mission is to eliminate hunger in southwest Virginia. As a one-of-a-kind organization in the region, the primary function of the Food Bank is to secure large quantities of life- and health-sustaining, donated food for the region. The food as well as non-grocery products is channeled through a network of more than 350 collaborating nonprofit charities in a 26-county and 10-city region. These charities provide food or meals to those who lack sufficient nutritious food.
During fiscal 2004-05 the Food Bank, through this collaborative effort, distributed 9.9 million pounds of food and related products to member food pantries, emergency shelters, soup kitchens, day-care, after-school programs, and elder-care programs, that in turn provided an alternate emergency food source to thousands of the most vulnerable in our communities who live with hunger and food insecurity on a regular basis - children, the ill and elderly, the homeless, and the working poor.
